D1 Retention — Build-to-Return Product Case
A product management case exploring how an optional, hands-on Build Mode and next-day artifact continuation could improve early learner retention, supported by an interactive prototype and a structured experiment plan.
Problem
Short-form learning can produce lesson completions without creating a compelling reason to return the next day. Learners may understand a concept but leave without applying it, retaining a useful artifact, or knowing what to do next. The product challenge was to create a meaningful next-day return incentive without adding excessive friction to an otherwise lightweight learning experience.
Approach
Designed a bounded Learn → Build → Return experience for new learners completing application-oriented lessons. An optional Build Mode lets users configure a small AI-assistant prototype through guided or challenge-based paths, retain a record of their work, and return the following day to improve the same artifact. Defined the target cohort, user journey, MVP boundaries and non-goals. Specified a treatment-versus-control experiment with strict calendar-day D1 retention as the primary metric, supported by funnel instrumentation, build-completion and continuation signals, friction guardrails, and explicit scale/iterate/stop decision rules. Built and deployed an interactive prototype to demonstrate the proposed experience before production experimentation.
Outcome / Learning
Delivered a working, publicly deployed product prototype and a documented experiment proposal connecting an identified retention problem to a focused intervention, testable behavior, and measurable decision criteria. The central product insight was to make the reason for returning tangible: improving something the learner already created, rather than relying primarily on generic rewards or reminders. This independent case demonstrates product framing, prioritization, prototyping, experiment design and engineering feasibility. The proposed retention improvement remains an untested hypothesis; no measured D1 uplift or production adoption is claimed.
